Exclusive: Manchester United are keeping an eye on 17-year-old Tijuana star Gilberto Mora, who shone in the World Cup against hosts Mexico and played a key role in their run to the last 16.

Manchester United have withdrawn from the race to sign Mexican sensation Gilberto Mora.

United have been monitoring Mora for six months. The club’s scouts also noted his progress at the World Cup, with Mora helping co-hosts Mexico reach the last 16.

However, the teenager’s impressive performances have also attracted keen interest from some of United’s biggest rivals. These include neighbors Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

And while United remain keen to consider signing some of the best young players in the world, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is not prepared to enter the race for Mora.

The 17-year-old has just signed a new long-term contract with Tijuana. However, the deal includes a £20m buyout clause that would ensure a move to Europe’s top club.

Mora, who shares the same agent as Erling Haaland, was selected to represent Mexico and became the youngest player to play at the World Cup. He made his World Cup debut in his team’s opening game against South Africa, becoming the youngest Mexican to play in the tournament.

Mora earned Mexico’s 32nd and final win against Ecuador on Tuesday, becoming the second-youngest player to start in a knockout game after Pele in 1958. He is considered one of the most promising players in the world game.

But Ratcliffe has recently indicated he has no intention of getting involved in a Dutch auction when it comes to United targets. United withdrew from contract talks this summer with the likes of Elliott Anderson and Matheus Fernandes.

And despite Mora’s huge potential, United will not be held to ransom for a player who has made just 50 first-team appearances in Tijuana.
