Despite England fans needing money to buy homes, some have booked trips at the last minute, with some spending thousands of dollars on World Cup trips.
Supporters also traveled to the United States for the tournament, but turned down the opportunity to buy tickets because the prices were “exorbitant.”
One England fan, Bradley Littlechild, 30, who now lives in Edinburgh, said he spent around £4,500 on his World Cup trip. He said: “I’m going to buy a house this year, and the young lady isn’t very happy, but I’m here.
“I probably spent about £4,500. I don’t know if that counts as pocket money, because… I bought three beers at Gillette Stadium (in Boston) and it was about $45 to $50.”
Whitley Bay resident Peter Harding, 74, said his 14-year-old grandson Len Pyle was allowed to leave school to travel to the US for the World Cup.
he said: “The teacher was great. They let him go, but I don’t think he’ll let him go anymore. Too bad it wasn’t during the school holidays, but if it had been, the price would have been even higher.”
Ms Wren added: “I should have been charged £400 to be taken out of school, but he let me out for free so I can’t complain.” The two have not yet been able to secure tickets to the game in New Jersey, citing high prices as the reason.
Peter said: “I think the amount they charge to attend a football match is obscene. I may have had two tickets to the last game, but they cost £4,000.”
