England will be forced into a round of 32 tie for the first time in World Cup history as FIFA expands to 48 member countries. The Three Lions will face the Democratic Republic of Congo in the next stage of their quest for glory across the Atlantic.
In previous editions of the competition, England would have progressed directly to the Round of 16 after winning Group L, but FIFA opted to expand the field from 32 to 48 teams to give more countries the chance to take part. This introduced an additional knockout phase on the road to the finals for each team that made it through the group stage. There was also more drama, with the top eight teams in third place also securing a place in the round of 32.
The group stage ended in a thrilling night as Austria and Algeria battled to a 3-3 draw, with both countries finding the back of the net in stoppage time. Algeria scored in the 93rd minute and could have qualified for the last 32 alongside Iran, but Austria were eliminated in disastrous circumstances.
However, Sasa Kalajdzic scored the equalizer in the 96th minute, and both teams secured a place in the finals. England secured top spot in their group with a 2-0 win over Panama on Saturday night, despite facing some problems.
The Three Lions struggled for the first hour against a stubborn Panamanian defense, but Jude Bellingham finally broke the deadlock. He then sent in a perfect cross just inches away for Harry Kane to score and become England’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup.
Manager Thomas Tuchel will be happy to have secured top spot in the group, but new defensive headaches remain. Jarrell Quansah was substituted in the second half immediately after Bellingham’s goal, filling in at right-back for the absent Reece James.
Jed Spence entered the fray and sat out the rest of the match, but the England manager will need to carefully consider his full-back options ahead of the showdown with the Democratic Republic of Congo. After the final whistle, Tuchel reflected positively on his team’s progress, saying: “We wanted to win in the group stage.
“There is no substitute for victory and we have that feeling again. We have three days to prepare for the game in Atlanta.
“The tournament starts anew again. There will be chapter one in the preparation camp, then there will be chapter two in the group, and then chapter three will come.”
Tuchel addressed concerns about defensive weaknesses, adding: “We got a little too excited, too eager to score the third goal, committed as well as the full-backs and everyone up front. We got a little nervous in the end, but we didn’t need that.”
“We chose a brave approach. The players want to play in this style and it was a moment to do that and impose on ourselves and play a high press. The game management could have been better when we were leading 2-0. I’m very happy with a lot of the details that we saw. It’s good to build on.”
