Reuben Amorim is putting Manchester United players on the pace in Chicago – and Luke Shaw explained the manager’s uncompromising approach on the training ground

Luke Shaw says it’s something that’s needed to get Manchester United back to the top.

United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, finishing the lowest in 51 years, missing out in Europe after losing to the Europa League final. Amorim has made a group of US Tour players to highlight his uncompromising approach, with his mission to restore high standards on and off the United’s pitch.

Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia were all away from the US tour, but Marcus Rashford rented it out to Barcelona.

The defender show said his ruthless Amorim’s refusal to compromise on high standards is something United need if they want to go back to competing for a major trophy. “He’s very strict with the group,” Shaw said. “Everyone has to put their team first, and he made that very clear.

“There are no stragglers in this group anymore. US players, especially experienced players, need to demand more from the daytime.

“We’re going to keep up the level of training, the times we’re doing this and doing it, and see if no one’s coming late. We all need to raise the level of demand. What Reuben definitely brings is demand, especially mentality.

“The mentality is a big thing. He talks a lot about it. Reuben asks for 100% and he doesn’t want anything less. If someone is 85-90% then that’s not enough.

“You’ve seen what he’s done with different players over the past eight months. He doesn’t care who the player is. If he doesn’t follow what he wants, then what it should be and obvious.”

Shaw, now United’s longest-serving player, has worked with five permanent managers over 11 years, acknowledging the atmosphere within the team is sometimes toxic.

“It’s not difficult to see from the outside,” Shaw said. “When I was here for the last few years, it was very negative, it is very toxic, it is an environment, it is not healthy at all.

“We need an environment that is healthy, it’s positive, has good energy and happiness. When you have all of them, you are free and you can express yourself on more pitches.

“In my time here, it feels like I’m probably the closest I’ve got on the team. Hopefully, it can last.”
