Former England captain John Terry has jokingly called Cristiano Ronaldo a liar after he complimented Piers Morgan. The Chelsea icon took aim at the 41-year-old with a tongue-in-cheek joke after complimenting the presenter’s abs.

Ronaldo has endured a rocky World Cup so far, but Morgan rushed to his defense after the Real Madrid and Manchester United icon came under fire. The 61-year-old broadcaster waxed lyrical about the Portuguese legend’s demeanor, repeatedly highlighting the Saudi Pro League champion’s physique.

After taking just 25 touches in the shock draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ronaldo faced criticism for his performance and his role in manager Roberto Martinez’s team was also questioned. Joao Neves’ sixth-minute header was canceled out by Newcastle United striker Yoan Wissa just before half-time, and in response the 41-year-old had just three shots, none of which tested 31-year-old Le Havre goalkeeper Lionel Mpathi-Nzau.

Morgan spoke of Ronaldo’s stature and described him as a “role model”. He said on the Sports Uncensored program: “I think he’s an incredible role model because he shows that age is a number. He’s 41 but has the body of a 30-year-old.

“He carries himself perfectly, which is great for a 41-year-old, better than you (Simon Jordan). If you look at my X feed, my pinned tweet is a clip of Ronaldo looking at me and saying, ‘Oh, nice abs.’

Terry hit back with a brutal attack on Morgan and Ronaldo was caught in the crossfire, he said, adding: “He is a top player but also a terrible liar.”

Ronaldo put any doubts to rest with a stunning double on Tuesday as Portugal took a big step towards qualifying for the World Cup finals. The 41-year-old was a key influence on Martinez’s side, scoring the opener and adding a second before the break to bring out the best in his teammates in a 5-0 thrashing.

As Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland stole the show with their relentless starts to their respective tournaments, the forward’s name faded into the background, if only temporarily.

“I would say it’s been a very tough week, a tough week, a week where public opinion has been very tough on us, on all the players and especially on the coach,” he said.

“When things are going well it’s always ‘Cristiano is good’ and when things are bad it’s ‘he’s retired, he’s old’ and always will be. But it was a good reaction for me and for my teammates.”

The 41-year-old Al Nasr forward added: “I always get there. It may be slow, but I am there. That is why I keep working and I strongly believe in what I am doing. I strongly believe that I am working hard and that God is helping me.”

“My career has always been like this and I’m very happy. Everything that comes from outside, we can’t control, because you can’t win if you don’t play well, so you always get attacked, especially me, but I’m used to it and I’ll keep moving forward.”
