Matheus Fernandes is expected to leave West Ham in the summer transfer window, with Manchester United reportedly to avoid signing the midfielder
Manager Teddy Sheringham has urged his former club Manchester United to avoid signing Matheus Fernandes from West Ham United. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with reports claiming personal terms have already been agreed between the parties.
Tottenham are also in contention for his signature, with United hoping to heed Sheringham’s warnings, with the former England striker asking the Red Devils to withdraw their interest after an underwhelming performance at the London Stadium.
He told ComeOn: “I wasn’t too impressed with Matheus Fernandes at West Ham last season. A lot of West Ham fans think he’s going to go on to bigger and better things, but the jury is still out on Fernandes. Manchester United need top players and they already have enough of them.”
“They need to get top players or they’re going to miss out on a lot of chances. It was the same with Harry Kane and Declan Rice who had the chance to sign them a few years ago. United were nowhere in the market to sign them.”
“That wouldn’t have happened with Sir Alex Ferguson. Sir Alex always brought in top players and they led by example. A club like United needs those top players, otherwise they would be in the same situation.”

“It’s not about having good players. To play for Manchester United, you want great players, because it takes a lot to play for a club. So let’s spend big money on top players and let them lead the way.”
United are widely expected to strengthen their midfield this summer following Casemiro’s departure, with Manuel Ugarte also potentially on the move.
Atalanta’s Ederson is set to formally complete his £38m move to Michael Carrick’s side after the World Cup, with Fernandes also among a number of midfield targets including Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleva, Alex Scott and Aurelien Choameni.
West Ham are demanding a transfer fee of around £85m for the relegated midfielder. According to the Times, Spurs are willing to exceed United’s offer, which gives them confidence to secure his signature.
The potential sale of Lukas Bergvall is thought to strengthen the club’s position in the transfer battle, with the young midfielder hoping to leave the club this summer.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side are also in the process of signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, a development that could give the Old Trafford side renewed optimism in their pursuit of Fernandes.
