Manager Thomas Tuchel has put a damper on the abusive language he directed at player Jed Spence during England’s goalless draw with Ghana. This came after the defender disrespected player Thomas Partey.

Thomas Tuchel claims he had to shout at Jed Spence. Otherwise his voice would never have been heard.

Tottenham defender Spence thwarted the England manager’s fightback during the goalless draw with Ghana. There was a public altercation during the match, but Tuchel said he expects more from Spence going forward.

Asked if he was satisfied with Spence, England manager Tuchel said: “Yes, defensively, but I would have liked him to be more involved in attack.”

“To start the attack a little wider and get more runs through the last line, but overall it was England’s first start in a major tournament so I always had that in mind.

“I have to shout because if I don’t, no one will hear me. I’m fine with Jed. We put Nico O’Reilly on and it almost paid off with a header and a big chance from Harry Kane.”

Meanwhile, Spence is unlikely to be sanctioned by FIFA for not shaking hands with Thomas Partey before kick-off. Although it has not yet been formally confirmed, it is thought unlikely that a disciplinary committee will be involved.

Spurs defender Spence’s failure to shake Partey’s hand before the game was later highlighted on television footage.

Partey currently faces seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in the UK. The charges stem from allegations made by four separate women in relation to incidents that reportedly took place in London between 2020 and 2022.
