At least 17 people were killed when a car plowed into World Cup fans celebrating Mexico’s victory over the Czech Republic. A driver commemorating his country’s home World Cup victory crashed directly into a crowd, injuring 17 people.

The disturbing footage begins with a vehicle driving slowly through a crowd of supporters, with a man covered by its bonnet. The man was then seen sliding out and others began attacking the car, with another throwing a drink at the rear windshield.

Seconds later, the car suddenly accelerated and drove through the crowd, scattering fans and slamming into a curb as the person filming screamed, “No way!”

Further footage revealed that the front end of the car was severely damaged. A group of supporters then rushed the car and confronted the driver, while the man lay motionless on the curb, bleeding from his head.

The horrifying incident took place last night (June 24) on a thoroughfare in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, after Mexico beat the Czech Republic 3-0 to book their place in the last 32 of the World Cup.

Officials confirmed that 17 people, both men and women, were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. At least one victim remains in critical condition.

Immediately after the chaos broke out, the area was cordoned off to allow emergency services to assist the injured and recover damaged vehicles.

Officials further confirmed that the driver was detained by security personnel at the scene. He was taken to hospital under police supervision and his legal status will be assessed if his health allows.

Los Cabos Secretary General Alberto Renteria Santana said: “Coordination between security agencies continues and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.”

“Our priority at this time is to care for, support and be there for those affected.”
