Benjamin Sesco moved over Ollie Watkins of Manchester United’s pecking order.
Benjamin Sesco is moving to the top of Manchester United’s wish list and is about to add a striker to the ranks. The Red Devils have already signed the Wolves and Brentford’s Brian Mbeumo Mateus Kuña, but Reuben Amorim is open to adding more firepower to his side following the club’s 2024/25 campaign.
After Leipzig missed Champions League football, the highly-rated Sesco is set to move on. United will be completely absent from European football this season, but it is not considered to have turned off the Slovenians.
Sesco is reportedly supporting the move across Newcastle to Old Trafford as Alexander Isaac, linked to Liverpool, is fishing for him to travel away from Tyneside. According to Athletic, Sesco is a ManUnited priority if he goes to another striker this summer, and is said to have had “unofficial” contact with Leipzig.

The Red Devils are also an admiration for Ollie Watkins, but are reluctant to meet Aston Villa’s 29-year-old England star’s £60 million rating. Sesko’s move now supports youth and potential over proven quantities like Watkins, so it seemed like a likely choice to have been given priority.
United had previously linked to Sesco, but in 2019 it balked by paying about £2 million to the then 16-year-old. In 2022 there was a subsequent approach before the club signed Joshu Azirky. Sesko has repeatedly cost several times more than he has since emerged as one of Europe’s most promising strikers, and has scored 39 goals in Leipzig’s 87 appearances since his arrival in 2023.
His current contract runs until 2029, and last year he only signed a new contract. He reportedly understood that if another club was offered in the area between £69 million and £78 million, he would be allowed to leave.
United’s arrival must be offset by several exits, with several players declaring their desire to leave the club. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have been removed from the US tour after training in the so-called “bomb squad” at the club’s Carrington complex. Marcus Rashford has loaned it to Barcelona.
United’s transfer deal has been widely criticised in recent seasons, but Amorim says CEO Omar Bellada and sports director Jason Wilcox will not be used solely to remove those surplus into the requirements.
“We need to find new places to have more space for our teams, and some people are clearly showing that other players want new challenges and that they want a new team,” Amorim said last week.
“We just have time to think and decide for these players. If they get to the point they have to join the team, they are our players, so they are our players.
“I know these people, Omar and Jason, and the club have a lot (price) for these players. If they don’t get to that, they’ll be Manchester United players.”
