Mr Keegan, 75, has not revealed what type of cancer he has, but enjoyed an extensive career as a player, particularly with Liverpool, where he made more than 300 appearances, won the Premier League three times and succeeded in winning the European Cup in 1977.
After spending time at the Anfield club, he joined Hamburg and, after losing to Nottingham Forest in the final at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, won the Ballon d’Or, the Bundesliga and the European Cup runner-up spot for the second year in a row.
He played in 63 games for England, scoring 21 goals, and also participated in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, where England were eliminated in the second round.
The striker previously coached Fulham before taking over as his country’s manager, but his campaign did not go well, as they were eliminated in the group stage of the 2000 European Championship.
Newcastle United, one of the clubs for which he had the most influence both as a player and manager, wanted to extend their full support to him and his family.
“Kevin Keegan occupies a unique place in the club’s history. His passion, leadership and connection to the club and city have resulted in some of the most memorable moments. We are always welcome and hope to have him back soon,” a statement on social media said.
During his time at Newcastle, Keegan led the team to the First Division, coming close to winning the national title three years later and finishing second in the 1997 season, just four points behind Manchester United.
