An Argentinian presenter has quit after spreading false news that Lionel Messi’s father Jorge had died on live television.
Argentine television presenter Florencia Pena resigned midway through the World Cup after falsely claiming that Lionel Messi’s father Jorge died because of the soccer legend’s emotional display after scoring the first of three goals against Algeria.
Before Messi’s family released a statement admitting that Jorge was facing a “health condition,” Peña made unsubstantiated claims that the Inter Miami star was “forced to withdraw” from Argentina’s defense of their World Cup title.
“I hate to give you bad news, but Messi’s father has passed away,” Peña said on Luz TV’s El Show del Verano. “He would have to leave the team in the middle of the World Cup,” she added.
Pena issued a statement late Thursday apologizing for the mistake and saying he was “deeply ashamed” of what happened.

Pena also confirmed his departure from Luzu TV. “I apologize to Messi’s family for the terrible moment they must be going through,” she said. “I am deeply ashamed to have been a vector for this pain.
“I must clarify that this false information was provided to me during a live broadcast, was verified by the show’s production team, and I trusted it.
“Nonetheless, I am responsible for my part in the mistake, so I have decided to step back and end my participation in Luzu. Once again, I sincerely apologize. I was wrong.”
Luzu TV also issued a public apology to viewers after the former host’s on-air gaffe. The broadcaster expressed regret for broadcasting unverified claims.
“We deeply regret the incident that occurred during the broadcast of the program. The channel cannot tolerate broadcasting confidential information without proper verification in advance.”
“As a result, Luzu TV’s management has decided to part ways with all responsible parties and Florencia Pena has decided to exit. We reaffirm our commitment to responsible, respectful and rigorous communication.”
Messi’s family broke their silence on Thursday, admitting that Lionel’s father Jorge is facing a “health condition” following the soccer icon’s visible distress during the game against Algeria.

“Jorge is suffering from health problems,” Messi’s family said in a statement. “He is currently undergoing medical observation and is recovering and doing well in his current condition,” the statement continued.
“At times like these, we call for responsibility, prudence and humanity,” the family concluded. “Personal health and the peace of mind of loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media attention.”
Argentina’s next World Cup game will be against Austria on June 22 at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium. The defending champions currently lead Group J, level on points but ahead of Austria on goal difference.
A victory will guarantee Argentina a place in the final tournament. However, given that eight of the top teams in third place will advance with wins, even a draw could be enough.
