Arsenal’s new £63.7 million striker Victor Gyoker has chosen to wear the iconic No. 14 shirt, once famous by Thierry Henry – and he hasn’t let it get away from the weight it carries
Viktor Gyoker knows exactly what comes with the territory. Arsenal’s new £63.7 million striker has chosen to wear the iconic No. 14 shirt, once famous by Thierry Henry.
And he hasn’t moved away from the weight it carries. “Of course I know about history,” Gyoker said. “There was no way too much to choose, but of course it was available. So when I found out that taking it was an easy choice.”
He hasn’t even followed a comparison with club legends. “It’s not really my intention to compare him to what he accomplished in his career, especially here. I just want to do my thing and show my qualities. Of course he was a great player, but he was different from me. I just want to do my thing.”
Mikel Arteta knows that signing a striker who can handle the pressure is essential and loves the fact that his new star wants No. 14 on his back.
“I think I use the term “conviction,” Arteta said. “That was the first thing I noticed when I spoke to him: people who were very determined, people who were really attached to the club, clubs, history, in this case, Thierry (Henry), and what the shirts represent.

Club captain Martin Odegard is already excited by what he saw. “I think you’ve seen what he’s done in his career so far. Especially last season in sports, the numbers speak for themselves. He’s a very complete player. He’s physically, fast, a good finisher, intelligent. He’s hungry, and you can see the energy he brings.
Gyoker was able to make his debut against the Spurs in Hong Kong, the first outside the UK, at the North London Derby on Thursday night. Waiting for the journey to pass was not easy.
The new striker added: “It was a new experience. I had never been in that situation before. It was a lot of waiting time from my side. I wanted to come here, but it wasn’t that easy.
He suited his relentless solo routine. “I tried to train myself as much as possible and continue the day. Many days were the same kind of routine. I woke up, trained, had dinner and went to sleep again.
Despite other offers, Arsenal has always been one. “Yes, I think you can always make your future decisions. Of course there were other clubs, but this time I didn’t think it would be a difficult choice for me.”
He rebutted the proposal that he is the North London Club’s missing link, saying that Arsenal has what it takes to win as a unit.
“You can make an impact on the pitch and the people on the bench. You need the whole team you’re with, and I think it’s a great opportunity to have a great season.”
Asked if the Old Trafford opener was ready, Gyoker smiled: “Yes.”
