Liverpool are set to start the 2026-27 season under a new manager, replacing Arne Slott with Andoni Iraola, and the Spaniard will be expected to oversee a marked improvement compared to last term.
Liverpool travel to Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the Premier League season for Andoni Iraola’s first game as manager.
The Reds traveled north-east for a 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday in front of television cameras as they look to get back into title contention under a new manager.
Nottingham Forest travel to Anfield next weekend for Liverpool’s first home game of the season. The Reds have blockbuster home games against Manchester City and Arsenal on October 10th and October 31st.
Manchester United then travel to Anfield on November 21st, before the first Merseyside derby of the season takes place at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium on November 28th.
Return games against the Reds’ biggest rivals at Old Trafford and Anfield respectively are scheduled for January 23rd and January 30th. All games after Opening Day may be moved for television coverage.
The hope at Anfield will be that Iraola can oversee a better season after a disastrous title defense under manager Arne Slott, who lost his job in the off-season.
Despite winning the Premier League title in the Dutchman’s first season, Liverpool lost 12 of 38 games and finished fifth in the top flight, just one place behind Iraora and Bournemouth, and three points behind.
This season, without Liverpool’s long-time talisman Mohamed Salah at the club, has ushered in a new era in more ways than one at Anfield.
The attacker announced his move to Liverpool this summer in the final week of the 2024-25 season, and the club have already started to strengthen their attack, signing Victor Muñoz while also pursuing a big deal for Yann Diomande.
