Lionel Messi is expected to remain at the World Cup despite news emerging that his father is having health problems.

The Argentine icon’s family has released a statement confirming that Jorge Messi, 68, is suffering from health problems. Messi was overcome with emotion after scoring the first of his three goals in the World Cup opener against Algeria in Kansas. He later explained that the reason for his tears was because something had happened in his homeland.

Argentina are scheduled to play Austria in Dallas next week, and Messi is expected to play.

The statement also harshly criticized the false rumors being spread about Messi Sr. and appealed to the family to deal with the matter alone.

“He is currently under medical supervision, is recovering and is doing well in his current condition,” the newspaper said.

“In light of the theories, rumors and speculation that have been circulating in recent hours, the family would like to express their deep displeasure at the lack of consideration, respect and reserve with which some people have treated a strictly personal, family matter.

“The family would also like to make it clear that only the closest family members have accurate and reliable information about Jorge’s condition.

“Therefore, no versions, statements or information other than those obtained from the family themselves or their official channels should be considered valid or true.

“At times like these, we call for responsibility, prudence and compassion.

“The health of individuals and the peace of mind of those around them should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media attention.

“We sincerely appreciate the expressions of love, respect and concern we have received and ask that the privacy, confidentiality and intimacy of Jorge and his entire family be respected during this process.

“Relevant updates will be promptly communicated by the family through appropriate channels.”

After the win against Algeria, Messi said: “Why did I cry? It had nothing to do with football…”

“I’ve had some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the whole squad and my teammates. They’ve always been by my side and gave me a lot of strength to get through it.”

Argentina's Lionel Messi reacts after scoring against Algeria

Lionel Messi was visibly emotional after scoring his first goal for Argentina vs. Algeria.

The 38-year-old followed up his reaction to open the scoring in his sixth World Cup with two further impressive goals.

His three hits in the tournament increased his tally to 16, tying him with Miroslav Klose, the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer. This was also his first hat-trick at a World Cup.

Messi will aim to become the perfect record holder in next Monday’s second group stage match against Austria.

England also got off to a perfect start on Wednesday as Thomas Tuchel’s side defeated Croatia 4-2 in Dallas. Harry Kane added another goal, with Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also scoring.
