Marcus Rashford will return to Manchester United and discuss his next move with executives after Barcelona refused to sign him permanently
Marcus Rashford is set to return to Manchester United after the World Cup for face-to-face negotiations with club leaders. Rashford’s hopes of a permanent move to Barcelona have collapsed, leaving his immediate future up in the air.
Barcelona signed Anthony Gordon in a £70m deal, but United refused to sign Rashford on loan for a second season at the Now Camp.
This means Rashford is no closer to knowing what his next move will be as he prepares for England’s World Cup opener against Croatia in Dallas. Rashford had little interest in remaining at United, severing ties with his hometown club and making a new start elsewhere.
And despite a change of manager last season when Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim, Rashford believes his long-term future is best left with another club.
However, United have blocked Manchester City or Liverpool, who had previously expressed an interest in Rashford, from joining, while Arsenal have cooled off on the idea of signing him.
Rashford wants to move to another European club, with United valuing him at £40m for a player Barca could sign for just £24m.
But unless someone agrees to match the asking price and pay him £16 million more than United were planning to sell him to Barca, Rashford will likely return to his parent club once he has time off following his World Cup appearance in England.
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains determined to sell the £325,000-a-week forward in order to free the club of his payroll costs. And he knows this summer is the best chance to let Rashford go, rather than risk having him in by June next year, when he enters the final 12 months of his contract.
United are moving on without him and continue to target a summer deal for Carrick, building a squad that appears to have no place for the 28-year-old defector.
