Manchester United are already looking to bring West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes to Old Trafford, but it has now been revealed they are interested in a new Hammers star.
Manchester United are thought to have approached West Ham about Crisencio Somerville as the Red Devils continue to rebuild their squad under manager Michael Carrick.
United have been focusing on their midfield in the transfer window, with a deal already agreed to bring Ederson to Old Trafford from Atalanta and funds in place to further strengthen the club. At least one more central midfielder is expected to follow the Brazilian, with Matheus Fernandes a top target.
Contract negotiations with Fernandes’ agent have already begun, with the West Ham midfielder expected to leave the London Stadium following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.
The 21-year-old is thought to be keen on a move and, in fact, may not be the only player to be traded from east London to Manchester this summer, with United also courting Somerville.
The Athletic reports that United are one of a number of clubs keeping an eye on Somerville, who has already attracted attention for representing the Netherlands at the World Cup. Along with Fernandes, the 24-year-old, who scored a superb goal for the Netherlands in the 2-2 draw with Japan, is one of West Ham’s most marketable assets following their relegation and could be on the move.
Somerville’s versatility makes him an attractive option if United were to sign a winger this summer, but strengthening their midfield remains the club’s priority.
United targeted established Premier League forwards Matheus Cunha and Brian Mbeumo during last summer’s transfer window, with both adding a new dimension to their attack and finding success. Somerville won’t need time to adapt to the Premier League, but he still has three years left on his contract with West Ham and will likely cost around £50m.
Marcus Rashford’s future will have a huge impact on whether United go ahead with a move to Somerville or move on to another winger in the transfer window.
The 28-year-old joined Barcelona on loan last summer with the option of a permanent deal, which was previously thought to be a formality.
But then Barca shelled out £70m on a deal to bring Anthony Gordon to the Camp Nou, leaving Rashford stuck. He still has two years left on his contract and even if he returns, United probably won’t be looking for a new wide attacker.
