Manchester United could see Ruben Amorim’s pay cut significantly if he takes up a new role at AC Milan.

The Portuguese coach, who was sacked by the Red Devils in January, is the frontrunner to become the Italian giants’ new head coach. United are paying a whopping £15.9 million in compensation for Amorim’s departure and for his staff, including four coaches.

However, The MEN report that United would pay their former manager significantly less if Amorim takes the job at San Siro.

Amorim has had a nightmare in Manchester, with United’s lowest ever winning percentage (32 per cent), lowest goals conceded per game (1.53) and lowest clean sheet rate (15 per cent).

Nevertheless, Milan have identified Amorim as their favorite candidate as they search for a replacement for Max Allegri. Italian clubs were considering Andoni Iraola before he joined Liverpool, with former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner also being considered.

Amorim’s reputation was not completely tarnished by his unforgettable spell at Old Trafford. Prior to that, he was in charge of Sporting Lisbon, where he was involved in a number of top jobs. In Portugal, he won the league twice and the Portuguese Cup three times, including one while at Braga.

If United can stop paying compensation to Amorim, it could further strengthen their transfer budget as the club looks to bring in a number of new players. Two midfielders are on the acquisition list and they are closing in on signing the Atalanta midfielder from Atalanta.

Milan are looking to bounce back after a disappointing end to the Serie A season. Allegri was sacked last month after failing to qualify for the Champions League. Milan finished fifth in Serie A, and the club’s board did not hesitate to express its disapproval.

“For most of this season we were in the top two in Serie A and had a solid chance of competing for the Scudetto,” it said in a statement.

“The final stages were completely inconsistent with previous performances and last night’s disappointing loss in the final game meant the season was a clear failure. It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganization of the football operations.”
