Viewers were left perplexed as the commentary for Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco appeared to be taken over by a television director. The incident occurred early in the second half when Vinicius Jr. was looking to double his record for the night, leaving social media users confused as if the coverage had been hijacked.
The BBC was broadcasting the opening Group C game between World Cup record holders and Morocco, who faced Senegal in the controversial African Cup of Nations final earlier this year. Coverage was relatively smooth until Guy Mowbray and Alan Shearer saw their voices joining another voice on the airwaves.
The image didn’t change, but I heard a voice say, “Thank you. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Go, go, go. Do you want to talk to me through the headset cord or don’t bother? Yes, you have two seconds.”
The incident also received little attention on social media, as viewers flocked to platforms like X. One user said: “Didn’t someone start talking on the BBC’s Brazil v Morocco commentary?”
Another said: “I thought for a moment I was having auditory hallucinations when I heard the BBC commentary…”
One user thought he was in the VAR room to discuss points from Brazil’s opening game. They wrote: “Is it me or did the BBC report choose the VAR conversation as a temporary commentary? #WorldCupShockingMoment.”

Due to the time difference between North America and the UK, one user joked that it served as a wake-up call. They tweeted, “Just then the BBC commentary woke me up and did a great job of saying ‘go go go’.
Scotland were watching intently ahead of their first group match against Haiti. Steve Clarke’s side knew the importance of a win, with upcoming clashes with Brazil and Morocco expected, and they secured a 1-0 victory courtesy of John McGinn.
The Moroccans sent an early message to Group C and the rest of the World Cup after a bright start against Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Brazil got off to a slow start but survived an early onslaught. They survived for 20 minutes before being cut open.
Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz threaded the ball through Ismael Saibari, and the PSV Eindhoven striker showed Arsenal’s Gabriel a clean heel before diving over a stranded Alisson Becker.
Brazil improved in this match, with Vinicius Junior breaking past Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi down the left and cutting back past Yassin Bounou.
Brazil could not find a way to break through the recalcitrant Bunu and were unable to separate the teams for the remainder of the match.
Liverpool’s Alisson Becker made a superb double save late in stoppage time to give Morocco a second wind.
It would be an ideal result for Scotland, as a win against Haiti would see them take an early lead in Group C. However, their gaffes did not end there, as the BBC’s pre-match reporting was not without errors.
Following a montage highlighting the Tartans’ showdown, footage showed commentator Scott Brown receiving instructions and presenter Kelly Cates putting in the finishing touches following the changeover from the Brazil match.
