Roy Keane spoke candidly in a phone call with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Roy Keane has spoken about his phone call with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. The two recently found themselves feuding following the former United captain’s comments.
Keane took issue with the attitude of United’s players after Fernandes broke the Premier League’s single-season record for assists on the final day against Brighton last month.
Fernandes had a fantastic individual season with United, registering 21 assists in the Premier League and helping the Reds finish third in the top flight, on the way to qualifying for the Champions League.
But the Portugal international was far from happy with Keane’s comments, with the United legend suggesting there was too much emphasis on assist records.
“I don’t mind the criticism,” Fernandez told Stephen Bartlett last month. “I always accept criticism from everyone, but I never reply to anyone. People have opinions, whether it’s good or bad, whatever.
“What I don’t like is when people lie about things. In this case, what you said about Roy Keane, basically what he said is a lie. Luckily for me everything is on record, but if it wasn’t then people would think Bruno is the player who always goes for the assist.”
“I even called Ole to send him a message saying, ‘I don’t care about the criticism. I don’t like it when people lie about what I say. This goes beyond what I think is acceptable and I’d like to have a word with you.'”
A few weeks later, Keane revealed he had spoken to the United captain on the phone.

“I think there was a reaction to something we said on the podcast a few weeks ago, and he contacted me and said he wanted to talk,” Keane said on the latest episode of Stick to Football’s “Overlap” podcast.
“I did, and I called him and we really had a nice chat about everything.
“That was great. Sometimes when you’re doing a podcast or a game, you think you’ve said something afterwards, and you’re trying to say something, but it doesn’t come through properly, and people get upset.
“He wanted to talk to me, and we had a nice, adult conversation.”
Following Keane’s latest comments, things appear to have cleared up between him and Fernandes, with the United captain set to focus on representing Portugal at this summer’s World Cup.
