Christian Eriksen, who collapsed on the pitch during the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, is doing well and hopes to be released from hospital today.

Television cameras showed the former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur star pressing his chest to the floor in the 65th minute before moving on to take another shot.

The match was suspended due to concerns for the 34-year-old star and was postponed with the score 2-1 against Denmark at Nature Energy Park, but the midfielder briefly lost consciousness and felt discomfort. Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during the 1-0 loss to Finland at the 2020 European Championship.

He had to undergo surgery to be fitted with an implantable defibrillator to ensure he could resume his playing career.

Danish national team doctor Morten Bosen provided an update, with Eriksen posting on his social media: “I spoke to Christian this morning and he’s fine.

“He is with his family and is doing well. He is expected to be discharged from hospital soon and return home. We are looking after our players and staff and continue to be in regular contact with them.”

Sunday’s incident sparked concern, with the Danish Football Association providing an update after players from both teams huddled to protect the midfielder. “Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances,” the DFU said in a statement. “The match has been cancelled.”

Besen, who was involved with the national team when Eriksen collapsed five years ago, confirmed that Eriksen would go to hospital for further tests.

“Christian is feeling well and left the pitch alone. As far as I can see, the pacemaker responded appropriately,” he said in a statement via BDU.

“He briefly lost consciousness, but quickly regained consciousness and we contacted him immediately. He will now undergo further tests at the hospital to determine the cause of the incident.”

“We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. However, Christian is doing well and he asked us to pay tribute to all the players and let them know that they are safe.”

Denmark coach Brian Riemer also provided an update after the game, saying: “Christian Eriksen waved to his team-mates as he left the pitch. A few minutes before he fell ill, he had an argument with Ruslan Malinovskyi and I thought that was why he looked so distressed, but I was wrong.”

“From that moment on, neither I nor the players on the pitch could continue.”
