Denmark vs Ukraine match canceled due to incident involving Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, but is conscious and doing well.

The midfielder fell to the floor in the 65th minute and the match was stopped midway through the second period. Players were seen crying on the pitch in alarming scenes reminiscent of his horror at Euro 2020.

The Danish Football Association (DBU) later confirmed that Eriksen was the player involved, but clarified that the fans were conscious. “Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances. The match has been cancelled,” the statement read.

Danish team doctor Morten Bosen said: “Christian is in good health and left the field of his own accord. From what I saw, his pacemaker was working properly. He briefly lost consciousness, but quickly regained consciousness and we contacted him immediately.”

“He will now undergo further tests at the hospital to determine the cause of the incident. We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is fine. He asked me to greet all the players and tell them he is okay.”

The Danish midfielder previously suffered cardiac arrest during Denmark’s match against Finland at Euro 2020. The match between Denmark and Finland was replayed a few days later. At the time, he was contracted to Italian giants Inter Milan.

Eriksen was banned from playing while wearing a defibrillator under Serie A regulations, but he made a full recovery and returned to the Premier League with Brentford.

Speaking about the incident that took place in June 2021, Danish team doctor Morten Bosen said: “There’s no explanation why it happened. I can’t answer that question.

He added: “He was gone. We did cardiac resuscitation, but he went into cardiac arrest. How close did we come to losing him? I don’t know, but we got him back after one passout, so it was pretty quick.”

Eriksen has previously expressed his pride in restarting his career over his incident. “I think I’ve proven that I’m a soccer player and not just someone who just had a heart attack. I’m a soccer player and yeah, that’s something I’m really proud of.”

“To prove to people in difficult situations that you can turn things around. Even in the darkest of times, time always brings something positive, and it’s the same for this club. Time heals a lot of things, and that’s how we pick ourselves up and get back on our feet.”

At the time of Eriksen’s incident, Denmark was leading 2-1. Patrick Dorg and Joachim Mare scored for their national team, while Viktor Tsygankov scored just before the break.

Eriksen started his professional career with Ajax and moved to Tottenham in 2013. He spent an even number of years at Spurs before moving to Inter Milan.

After his heart attack, he represented Brentford and Manchester United. He left Old Trafford in the summer to join German club Wolfsburg.
