“When we tell foreigners that we are from Santos, the first thing they say is ‘Pele’. That’s why we at the museum have a great responsibility to convey the name of Pele and the city of Santos,” said museum director Paulo Monteiro. “Following his death, we now have an even greater and more difficult mission to keep his legacy alive.”
Many of Santos’ more than 400,000 residents never had the chance to watch Pele play, but they hope his legacy lives on.
Among them is bar owner Anderson Albino.
“As local business owners, we see how much international media comes here and how it draws a huge number of visitors,” Albino said. “For those of us who are from this city, it is an honor for Pele to play for Santos.”
