Some members of the Glazer family reportedly want to sell their stake in Manchester United

Some members of Manchester United’s co-owner Glazer family are reportedly considering selling their stake in the club. The family has owned the club for more than 20 years, but it has been the subject of fan protests.

Bloomberg reported that several members of the family are holding “internal discussions” about a potential stock sale and hope to persuade others to do the same. He added that discussions were being held by some individual members rather than the entire family, and some were opposed to the sale.

This reportedly could make any deal difficult unless they change their mind. Potential buyers who want to buy United stock will likely face a hefty price tag.

Mirror Football said in October last year that the Glazers would only consider offers of more than £5bn if they were to sell a stake in the club. The valuation is said to take into account the value United would be worth if they completed plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium.

Abram and Joel Glazer currently serve as United’s co-executive directors. Kevin Glaser, Brian Grazer, Darcy Glaser Kassewitz and Edward Glazer have all been named as directors.

In February 2024, the Glazers sold a 27.7 per cent stake in the club to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS business. The businessman completed the takeover and paid a fee of £1.25 billion to take charge of the football business.

According to the latest New York Stock Exchange share price, United are trading at around $21 (about £15.6), giving the club a market value of around $3.6 billion (about £2.7 billion). But given the voting rights guaranteed by Glaser’s stock, the asking price would be even higher.

There has been speculation for some time about a potential takeover at Old Trafford. Saudi businessman Turki al-Sheikh hinted at a possible takeover in October.

He is heavily involved in organizing big boxing events. He is now said to be closing in on a potential takeover of Championship club Derby County.
