Sheffield’s Wednesday crisis leads to major new concerns ahead of the new championship season

Sheffield Wednesday fell into a major financial crisis ahead of the new championship season under owner DigiPhon Chansiri, and repeatedly failed players to pay

The English Football League (EFL) is increasingly concerned about the situation in Sheffield on Wednesday. The owl has been in crisis and has been unable to pay players for three consecutive months under owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Wednesday’s friendly match against Burnley was cancelled and the players don’t want to be in the end. Many players have already left this summer after Josh Windus, Michael Smith, Akin Famewo, Callum Paterson, Mallik Wilks, Pol Valentin and Michael Ihiekwe went ahead and finished their contracts.

Also, a report from BBC Sport said they are worried that the EFL will not be able to play its opening championship game against Leicester on August 10th. The EFL charged both Changsilli and the club in June for violating the rules by failing to pay wages.

The professional soccer player association also supports the players, with CEO Maheta Morango describing the situation as “shocking.” “Unfortunately, there’s a pattern of delayed payments on Sheffield Wednesday, and I think it’s the third time in four months,” Morango said last month.

“We’ve been in touch with players, and our role is not to tell them what they need to do (it’s) to give them the tools and say, “It’s something we can do if these standards are met.”

“Then it’s about assessing what they want to do. It’s not for granted that just because certain criteria are met, someone will just automatically end the contract. There are other considerations.

“As you can imagine, it’s not an easy situation, because ultimately people need to be paid, because for me, this is something I’ve seen in other countries I’ve played, but I don’t see in the UK.

“So we really want to be strong about it. This is something we don’t tolerate, and we’ll be too much on top of that. It’s not a good situation, but somehow I hope there’s a positive solution to it.”

In June, Chansiri rejected two offers to sell the club, saying:

“Our fans aren’t happy and want to sell to me. Some people said this when they contacted me directly. All I ask is don’t believe everything you read on the media or social media.

“I’m willing to sell, but I’ll repeat that the transaction must be correct in every aspect. It’s not just about price. I’ve been serious about looking for investments from new stakeholders.

“I understand the frustration of everyone during this difficult time. I can once again apologize to our people and ensure that we are doing everything we can to ensure that every day, every day, in the best possible way for the present and the future.”
