Exclusive: Bruno Fernandes is nearing the end of his best season at Manchester United, but speculation over his long-term future and new contract rears its head once again
Manchester United have shelved contract talks with Bruno Fernandes.
Club leaders have guaranteed that Fernandes will remain at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future. United’s leaders remain relaxed about the situation and plan to begin negotiations with the Portuguese midfielder on a new and improved contract by the end of 2026.
Fernandes is entering the final year of his current £250,000-a-week contract, with an option to extend it by 12 months.
Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is now understood to have put Fernandes’ future on the back burner, with his priority now being to sign him a new contract instead.
Fernandes traveled to North America with the Portuguese national team ahead of the World Cup. But before heading to the tournament, he spoke with United bosses and made it clear he had no intention of leaving.
United have secured a return to the Champions League next season.
Another factor in Fernandes’ decision to stay was the club’s assurance that the squad would be significantly strengthened this summer. United are close to completing a £35m deal with Atalanta for Ederson, with other midfield targets also on their wanted list.
Manager Michael Carrick is also keen to sign a new center back and left winger. Fernandes has been a revelation for United in recent seasons.
He has won a number of individual awards this season and remains an important part of the team’s future under Carrick.
Fernandes has a release clause of £55m, but given he will turn 32 in September and his high salary, United are confident no club will agree to this clause.
Fernandes’ retention will be a huge boost for United as they aim to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
