England’s World Cup squad numbers often indicate who a manager is tipping to start, and Thomas Tuchel is tasked with guiding the Three Lions to glory.
England’s team numbers for the World Cup have been leaked. It contains a big hint as to which squad Thomas Tuchel will select for the game against Croatia. The Three Lions will begin their campaign at AT&T Stadium in Dallas on Wednesday 17 June at 9pm UK time.
Tuchel’s side then face Ghana on Tuesday 22nd June, before facing Panama on Saturday 26th June. The England manager named his squad for the World Cup just under two weeks ago, a decision that caused a huge controversy.
England’s squad numbers have now been announced four hours before the official announcement at 3pm on Tuesday, hinting at Tuchel’s first-choice squad. Despite playing minimal minutes for Manchester City this season, John Stones will be number five in this competition, replacing Ezri Konsa at centre-back and partnering number six Marc Gehi.
Nico O’Reilly has been given the number 3 shirt and has been tipped to start at left-back. Elliott Anderson is England’s No. 8 and will likely cement his place in midfield behind Declan Rice at No. 4.

Marcus Rashford has been given the number 11 shirt, which could mean he outranks Anthony Gordon (number 18) in his attacking position. Of course, numbers don’t mean everything. Reece James wore his favorite number 24 jersey, but is expected to start at right-back.
Consa, perhaps Stones’ biggest competition for the centre-back position, was given the number two jersey, usually reserved for the starting right-back. Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham remains at number 10, despite Morgan Rodgers (17th) frequently surpassing him in the pecking order under Tuchel.
On Monday, 21 members of the international squad arrived in Miami for England’s pre-competition camp, with the remaining five members given extra time off after reaching the European finals with their respective clubs. Dean Henderson helped Crystal Palace win the Conference League, but Arsenal stars Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Ebereshi Eze lost out in the Champions League final.

England are scheduled to play two warm-up friendlies before the start of the World Cup, both of which will be held in Florida. The Three Lions first face New Zealand on Saturday at 9pm, before facing Costa Rica at the same time next Wednesday.
Tuchel could experiment during friendlies and, more importantly, manage the playing time of his biggest stars. It is unclear whether the four young players selected to take part in training in Miami – Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, Fulham star Josh King, Liverpool winger Rio Ngmoha and Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri – will take part.
