Arne Slott has resigned as Liverpool’s head coach following a poor season, but the Dutchman could return to the role soon.
Arne Slott has emerged as the front-runner to take charge of AC Milan after leaving Liverpool. The Reds confirmed in a statement on Saturday that the Dutchman would “resign from his position as head coach with immediate effect” following the disastrous result of the 2025/26 season.
Despite qualifying for the Champions League, Liverpool ended the season without a win in four consecutive games, with Slott’s team being ejected from the pitch in the last two home games. Interest in the slot position at Anfield has been growing, with Liverpool pulling the trigger six days after the curtain fell on the Premier League.
Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is the overwhelming favorite to succeed him, with former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, Lens’ Pierre Sage and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann also vying for the hot seat at Anfield. Slott could be back in the dugout sooner than expected as Liverpool begin their search for a new manager.
According to the Daily Mail, the Dutchman is already being considered as a possible candidate for AC Milan. Milan are looking for a replacement after sacking manager Massimiliano Allegri after losing 2-1 to Cagliari last Sunday and missing out on next season’s Champions League qualification.
Il Rossoneri had been on course for a return to Europe’s top club competition for most of the season, but suffered a slump in the second half of the season, ultimately finishing fifth with just two wins from eight games and one point behind fourth-placed Como. As a result, Milan will participate in the 2026/27 Europa League alongside Juventus, who finished in 6th place, one point behind them.
Following the loss to Cagliari, Milan sacked coach Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare, CEO Giorgio Furlani and technical director Jeffrey Moncada in a condemning statement released on Monday. Antonio Conte, Glasner, Marcelino and Unai Emery are among Milan’s top candidates to replace Allegri, with Slott emerging as another name being considered to join the Rossoneri for next season.
Milan are in talks with Iraola, who left Bournemouth last Sunday but is awaiting a call-up from Liverpool.

The Rossoneri do not need Liverpool’s permission to approach Slot, as his exit terms are thought to leave him free to talk to the club, but the key question remains whether he will take some time off to recharge his batteries first.
Slott was appointed Liverpool’s head coach by Jurgen Klopp in 2024 and won the Premier League title in his debut season. However, the Reds, who spent more than £400m on him, struggled in his second season and his sacking this summer seemed all but inevitable.
In a short message after it was announced that he was leaving Liverpool, Slott said: “It’s been a great experience and I’m very grateful that we won the league last season.”
