West Ham United have announced that Nuno Espirito Santo will remain as manager through the club’s Championship season.
The tactician performed well after taking over at the London Stadium, but it proved too late for the Hammers.
They will spend next season in the Championship and will have Espirito Santo as their manager.
“Football operations have always been our top priority and planning for next season began as soon as the final whistle sounded on Sunday,” the capital club said in a statement.
“We spoke with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo earlier this week and are pleased to confirm that, like us, he has expressed his continued commitment to the club. Nuno made it very clear from his first sounding that he is very keen to take on the challenge of getting West Ham United back into the top flight and that must be his undoubted goal for next season.”
“Nuno has played in the EFL Championship for the past year and had great success in 2018, winning the title with Wolverhampton Wanderers with 99 points.
“While Sunday’s final result was painful, the board believes there have been widespread signs of improvement and progress in recent months and hopes Nuno can continue to build on that progress.
“The total of 25 points we scored in our last 17 Premier League games equated to 1.47 points per game, a rate that would have seen us finish seventh overall for the season. “Additionally, we have seen a clear improvement in the team’s mentality and cohesion since January, which we feel has led to an improvement in performances and results, and we feel he is the right person to take us forward.”
