Tottenham Hotspur’s leaders did not include an end-of-season message in Sunday’s match program, but non-executive chairman Peter Charrington wrote an open letter to supporters after the club secured a spot in the Premier League on the final day.
Tottenham have pledged to invest heavily to build a squad ready to compete for the Premier League title.
Spurs’ non-executive chairman Peter Charrington has written an open letter to supporters, admitting that an “unpleasant truth” has been revealed at the club this season. Charrington insisted the club was not for sale and that the Lewis family were undertaking a “complete reset” after finishing 17th for the second year in a row, this time only breaking that position on the final day of the Premier League season.
After Tottenham narrowly survived relegation on the final day of the Premier League season, leaders insisted the Lewis family would undertake a “complete reset”. Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi has been handed a blockbuster five-year contract with a huge survival bonus, and the club insists he is determined never to be in this position again.
It would include a complete overhaul of the club’s operations and aim to rebuild, but Charrington was quite honest in admitting the club did not have “the right expertise for key roles”.
In an apparent dig at how the club was allowed to “decline” under former president Daniel Levy, Charrington said the Lewis family was determined to move on.

Charrington said: “Last September we recognized that something serious needed to change at Spurs. The Lewis family stepped in and approved a complete reset.”
“This decision was not taken lightly and is behind schedule, but what has been implemented is genuine and represents a real break from what has come before.
“As part of that process, we discovered some inconvenient truths. The attributes that set Spurs apart, our football, our ambition and the connection between our team and our supporters, were allowed to fade. Football success was not the driving force behind our decisions.”
“We didn’t have the right expertise in key roles. We couldn’t build a team good enough to compete in the most demanding league in the world.
“A second consecutive 17th place finish is unacceptable. We are not going to gloss over it other than to say we fell well short of the expectations of this club.”
Charrington also made five important promises to his fans:
We are building a team, led by head coach Roberto, with the right mix of experience, youth and leadership to compete at the highest level of Premier League and European football. We have invested over multiple transfer windows to rebuild, balance and strengthen, and this summer is an important first step in that effort. We will continue to modernize our football operations with a focus on improving standards across healthcare and performance. We will increase investment in our academy to ensure the pathway from youth football to the first team is one of the strongest in the country. is building on a strong season for Spurs Women by continuing to invest in Martin Ho’s world-class women’s team.
Charrington also said that the club is not for sale, despite huge speculation that one of the key factors in Levy’s move was to prepare Tottenham for the market.
Charrington added: “There has been a lot of speculation about the ownership and future direction of the club, but let’s be frank: Tottenham Hotspur is not for sale. The Lewis family are fully committed to this club and this rebuild. They will provide the stability and investment we need at all levels to take us forward and we see it as a long-term commitment, not a short-term solution.”
“This season has fallen far short of what Tottenham Hotspur want. We have to compete against the best teams in this league every season and we are rebuilding this club with those criteria in mind.”
