Manager James Maddison has urged Tottenham Hotspur to investigate the potential causes behind the club’s alarming injury record this season.

Spurs narrowly avoided relegation on Sunday, retaining their Premier League status with a 1-0 win over Everton in their final game of the season.

Roberto De Zerbi was poached by Tottenham in March and managed to steer the north London club to safety as West Ham slipped into the Championship, finishing 17th, two points out of the relegation zone.

Maddison came off the bench against the Toffees, making his third substitute appearance since returning from a serious knee injury sustained during pre-season last summer.

Spurs have had to deal with a number of injury problems throughout the season, with Christian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, Xavi Simmons, Mohamed Kudus, Wilson Odbert and Ben Davies all missing from the team that beat Everton.

Maddison was limited to the final three games of the season, while Rodrigo Bentancur, Dominic Solanke, Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall also spent significant time on the treatment table this term.

The midfielder explained why he believes Tottenham have suffered more injuries than any other Premier League club this season and called on Spurs to get to the bottom of the matter.

“Our injury situation is worse than any other club,” Maddison told reporters after Tottenham’s win over Everton.

“People try to say, ‘Oh, but we have this and that.’ But what we have is astronomical, and we need to think about why it is so.

“Sometimes it’s just bad luck, sometimes it’s a coincidence, like me getting my ACL or Kulusevski getting beaten up so bad by[Marc]Guehy. It’s not the medical team’s fault, it’s not the pitch’s fault, it’s not the theory you see, and sometimes it’s rubbish.

“We were a bit unlucky, but like I said, the big names we missed certainly had an impact and we can’t just deny that.

“If me, Kulusevski, Kudus and Bentancur had been out for three months or so. I strongly believe that if they had been out the whole season, we wouldn’t be in this situation.”

“That’s not just me being naive, it’s just a fact. But that’s the situation we’re in and I’m proud of our players for digging deep today.”
