Manchester United are preparing for a busy transfer window as they continue their early preparations for next season. Michael Carrick’s side will be looking to strengthen their position in the table and build on their third-place finish in the Premier League. With Casemiro leaving, strengthening the midfield has become a top priority and United are keen to bring in several new players in that area. Atalanta star Ederson is inching closer to a move to Old Trafford as the club’s reinforcement strategy begins to take shape.

Coby Mainu has flourished during Carrick’s tenure as manager and is widely expected to remain in the role regardless of which permanent manager is appointed. The 44-year-old spoke candidly about the importance of being an England player and revealed his role within the team.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford continues to be linked with a sensational return to United after a loan spell with Barcelona. Here, Express Sport examines some of the most important stories surrounding the club.

Marcus Rashford offers a way home

Former United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen believes Rashford could be given a chance to prove his worth under Carrick.

Barcelona have an option to sign the forward permanently for £26 million, but that clause has not yet been triggered and Meulensteen has suggested talks with the United manager could pave the way for a surprise return for the forward, who last appeared for the Red Devils in December 2024.

“Marcus Rashford has a way back because Michael Carrick knows him,” Meulensteen told BOYLE Sports. “I think there’s a really important conversation that needs to be had, and it’s not binary.”

He added: “Maybe it was good for him to step away for a while and look back at Manchester United from the outside, because it also gave him an opportunity to understand how much Manchester United actually meant to him.”

“He knows Michael and Michael knows him, so I think that’s definitely a good conversation for them to have. And obviously, it all depends on exactly what the expectations are on both sides.”

Michael Carrick clarifies stance on transfer

The United manager has made it clear that when the club buys a defensive midfield player, the choice will not be solely based on how well he complements Maynou. The 21-year-old formed an impressive partnership with Casemiro, but Carrick stressed that identifying a partner for Maynou should not drive the club’s reinforcement strategy.

“So it’s a good balance,” the United manager said. “There’s a balance as a football club because you don’t have to bring in players just to play with one player at any given time.

“I think it’s about fitting into the team, the balance of the team, whether we can cope with playing multiple games here and in different competitions. So it’s not necessarily… I’m talking about a pretty broad spectrum here in general. You don’t bring any player in just to play with one player, but there are certainly dynamics and you have to balance it out.”

He added, “The beauty of Coby is that he can do so many things so well. I think he’s proven that and he’s evolved a lot in the four or five months that I’ve watched him progress. And that’s who he is.”

“I’m not going to take credit for it. He’s done it on his own, but I think he’s shown that he can do so many things. So once he’s able to adapt, it makes it a little bit easier to bring in guys to play with guys like Coby. And I think he’s adapted over time.”
