Manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed his 26-man England squad for the World Cup, but some fans are not satisfied. The German announced on Friday morning his participation in this summer’s tournament, which includes a number of surprises.

Many celebrities will be watching the World Cup from home, but there are some surprising names among them.

England supporters have been reacting to the announcement since Tuchel officially announced his squad. Some decisions have been praised, while others have caught supporters off guard.

Mirror Football takes a closer look at some of the most controversial inclusions and exclusions ahead of the World Cup.

Dan Byrne criticizes Harry Maguire

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was one of the first to confirm he would be left out of the squad on Thursday, and his exclusion may be one of the most shocking.

Maguire has enjoyed a remarkable comeback at Old Trafford under manager Michael Carrick, earning him a new contract. And if that happens, he would fit into Tuchel’s clear ethos of “form before reputation”.

He returned to the England squad earlier this year, but Tuchel quickly made it clear he was far down the pecking order. Maguire was sacked and replaced by Newcastle’s Dan Byrne. The two have similar attributes considering their height and physical ability, but McGwire’s experience meant he should have been included.

The 33-year-old has 66 caps for the Three Lions and has plenty of tournament experience. His absence from the squad is controversial, as his voice alone would have been a useful asset to England.

Jed Spence vs. Trent Alexander-Arnold

Some would argue that former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold failed to set the world on fire on the international stage. And to some extent, that would be true.

The defender has struggled to translate his club performances into England football, but remains the most creative right-back in world football, far ahead of Spurs’ Jed Spence.

The latter is, of course, a solid defender, but he has had a less-than-inspiring season in North London and his chances may be in doubt after picking up an injury in the club’s penultimate game this season. We rarely, if ever, see him play soccer in the World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold might have suffered a similar fate, but he is still a better player and would have been a useful addition.

More than Jordan Henderson, Adam Wharton or Morgan Gibbs-White

Jordan Henderson has done enough to secure his place in the team and has gone from being a former Liverpool star to being a different star now. Some may say his experience is a valuable asset given Maguire’s absence.

However, there are more effective midfielders left at home and a better pick would have been made. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton effectively plays the same role, albeit with younger players on his side. There’s a reason why he’s being touted for a big-money move elsewhere.

And if Tuchel wanted more of a goal threat, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White would have been the obvious choice. His form effectively dragged the Midlands side into safety, and that momentum could have been invaluable in high-pressure situations like the World Cup.

Both Gibbs-White and Wharton are young and know they will get another chance, but that chance should have come this summer.

Noni Madueke is better than Jarrod Bowen and Harvey Barnes

Yes, Noni Madueke is a Premier League champion. And yes, he could arrive in the United States with an eye-catching double under his arm.

However, he has scored just two goals in the Premier League this season, with the last time he found the back of the net in the league back in February. Is that what the best player this country has to offer? not much.

Madueke is certainly talented, but should he have been included instead of Jarrod Bowen, who has 21 goal involvements in a team on the brink of relegation? no.

Or should he have been included over Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes, who has scored 16 goals and is more than capable of making an impact off the bench? no.

Ivan Tony

Ivan Toney vs. Cole Palmer

This is probably the most controversial. Ivan Toney certainly knows where the goal is – his 72 strikes over the past two seasons are proof of that.

The only problem is that all of these goals have come in the Saudi Pro League since leaving Brentford in 2024. Considering he could be a third-choice striker behind Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins, it might have been more productive to add a player who could make a bigger impact, namely Cole Palmer.

Despite a difficult season at Chelsea, he has still scored 10 goals this season. He can certainly create something out of nothing. That may be exactly what England need to progress through the tournament. When it comes to Tony, the Three Lions’ creativity needs to be at its best, but it wasn’t always at its best.
