Mohamed Salah finds himself in trouble at Liverpool

Former Everton and Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has said he would forbid Mohamed Salah from parting ways with Liverpool if he was manager. Salah, 33, will end his nine-year spell at Anfield on Sunday when the Reds host Brentford.

The two-time Premier League champion has underperformed this season and has found himself out of favor under manager Arne Slott. And after suggesting in December that he had been made a scapegoat by certain club officials, Salah went on another public rant in the wake of Friday’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa.

The veteran winger clearly disparaged Slott’s tactics on social media, lamenting the “heavy metal” football that was produced under former manager Jurgen Klopp. However, these comments received very negative reviews, joining a chorus of critics calling for Allardyce to decide to make his feelings public before the end of the season.

“If Mohamed Salah is going to say something like that, then say it when he’s gone,” he told BOYLE Sports and Footy Accumulators’ podcast No Tippy Tappy Football. “Don’t say things like that as if you’re bigger than the football club when you’re still there.

“If I were Liverpool’s owner I would suspend him. I would think: ‘Who do you think you are? You are no bigger than this football club.’

Tuesday’s draw between Bournemouth and Manchester City means Liverpool are virtually guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League. The only way they can move out of the Premier League’s top five is if they lose by a big margin at home to Brentford on Sunday and Bournemouth also win at Nottingham Forest.

Allardyce, 71, reflected on Salah’s abuse towards his club towards the end of 2025 after being substituted on the bench for the 3-3 draw with Leeds. And just like back then, he has come under scrutiny for not fulfilling his personal responsibilities as his business performance has declined.

“The fight we had at the beginning of the season went back to fighting, and he hasn’t really hit his stride since then,” Allardyce continued. “If you think about what kind of player he used to be, he hasn’t been able to do that this season.

“Salah should look at himself and how bad he has been this year. Players and managers can row in their offices, but they shouldn’t do it in public. If Salah had done that in[Sir Alex Ferguson’s]era, he would never play again. He’s finished.”

Jamie Carragher, Wayne Rooney and John Arne Riese are just some of the names that have reflected similar thoughts recently. Given that Liverpool’s place in next season’s Champions League is still not guaranteed, and given his recent form, it would be surprising if he starts against the Bees on Sunday.

It’s a shame that the Anfield icon’s tenure is coming to an end, considering what he has helped the club achieve over almost a decade. The two-time Premier League Player of the Season will go down as a legend anyway, but there is an unavoidable sense that his reputation has been tarnished by his public abuse in recent months.
