The outcome of Southampton’s ongoing Spygate investigation could have a major impact on Leeds United’s transfer plans. The Whites are reportedly targeting Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, with the Championship club thought to be demanding £20m for his services. Hackney is set to enter the final year of a contract that expires in 2027.
However, future moves could largely depend on the verdict handed down on the Saints. Saints were accused by the EFL of spying on Middlesbrough’s training session just two days before the first leg of their play-off semi-final. An independent inquest is currently underway and Southampton are scheduled to play Hull City in the Wembley play-off final on Saturday.
Leeds, who secured their spot in the Premier League earlier this month, are keen to strengthen their squad, but this decision could have an impact on their ability to sign Hackney.
If Middlesbrough are able to return to the play-offs and win promotion, the club could choose to keep their prized asset or slap a significantly higher price tag on him.
On the other hand, if the committee rules in Southampton’s favor, Middlesbrough could find it harder to retain Hackney and lose much of their bargaining power, and Leeds could be able to sign Hackney for significantly less than their original offer.
Leeds’ return to the Premier League has been a success, with the Whites currently in 14th place with one game remaining. Despite looking certain to be relegation candidates back in March, Farke’s side have since gone on an incredible eight-game unbeaten run.
