“It’s been a really crazy life,” he told reporters last week, shortly before being selected to the Ivory Coast’s roster. “Everything went quickly.”

Most of the world’s top teen players prestigious club academy In Europe, Diomande played for the DME Academy in Daytona Beach, where he led local club team AS Frenzi to a national title.

He returned as the German league’s Rookie of the Year with 12 goals and nine more assists this season. leipzig.

lonely time

Diomande arrived in Florida from Ivory Coast when he was just 15 years old, had no family and spoke only French. Although he is grateful for his education in the United States, the memories are bittersweet.

“I was really far away from my family, my friends, my loved ones. It was very difficult because I didn’t speak English before, but it was a great experience to be there,” he said.

Diomande took an unusual career path through Florida when he was too young under international soccer rules to sign a professional contract outside his home country.

He said he struggled with “unhealthy” food, Americans preferring basketball to soccer, and other culture clashes.

“I’m from Africa, so it was a very different culture. There was a lot of kind of respect in the way you talked to people,” he said, adding that the United States “wasn’t the same.”

A move to the Spanish league with Leganes in January 2025, where he made his professional debut against Real Madrid, followed by a move to Germany in July, giving Diomande the opportunity to shine against the best opponents in the world.

These multi-million dollar transfers will also leave a lasting financial legacy for his family and the small-town Florida club Frenzy.

Two games, different worlds

When Ivory Coast play their World Cup opener against Ecuador at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on June 15, it will be a world away from Diomande’s last big game on American soil.

Back in August 2023, the winger scored both goals in front of a crowd of a few dozen people in Loudon, Virginia, as his Frenzy team defeated Sporting Wichita to win the United Premier Soccer League, a lower-level U.S. developmental competition.

It showed Diomande’s speed and skill as he passed two players and took the lead. Scoring the winning goal in extra time showed his stamina and ability to find space on the field.

Team owner Wayne Dorman remembers Diomande being such a dedicated player to his teammates that he ended his trial with the Major League Soccer team early in order to return to the championship game.

“After he scored the winning goal in the final, he cried,” Dorman told The Associated Press. “He got down on his knees and cried. He looked so happy. That took him to a new level. He was the MVP of the tournament and it was ‘the sky’s the limit.’

Dorman remembers a player who “wowed” coaches with his skills during his first tryout, dodged rough tackles as word spread and opponents targeted him, and showed ambition and leadership worthy of one day being Ivory Coast’s president.

He was also a kid who practiced by playing French music in Doman’s car and listened to Jamaican-born Doman’s reggae in return.

a lasting legacy

Diomand believes that no matter how hard it was for him personally to find his time in the United States, it was worth it.

“It’s really hard in Africa, so it was easier for me to stay in America,” he said.

His current rapid rise in world football means he can change the lives of his family as well.

“I know money can’t buy happiness, but this is part of it,” he added. “I get a lot of money from Leipzig to help my family, to bring them here and take care of them.”

More could happen. Diomande has been linked with a move to one of Europe’s biggest teams, which he admits gives him extra motivation to put on his best game.

Dorman said Frenzy would receive a small portion of the transfer fee as part of the FIFA program, which supports teams developing young players. That would allow Frenzy to start a team of younger kids and mean “we could remain a club for quite a few years,” Dorman said.

Diomande has hinted at Chelsea or Real Madrid as future destinations for his career, but first the World Cup.
