Andy Robertson’s brutal take on Liverpool’s defeat at Aston Villa shows his true character

Liverpool’s outgoing icon Andy Robertson has given a scathing assessment of his team-mates as the Reds’ Champions League place is in jeopardy after a 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa.

Andy Robertson has slammed the Reds’ performance in their 4-2 loss to Aston Villa in their 12th Premier League game. The Scotland international paid his respects to the traveling Anfield fans but did nothing to show for it in his last away game for the club, despite coming on as a substitute.

A disastrous season sank to a new low on Friday night as Unai Emery’s side clinched Champions League qualification at the expense of Liverpool. This makes it pointless for the Reds to ask Bournemouth and Brighton to stall in their penultimate league game ahead of a final-day clash with Brentford, but as things stand, Liverpool remain just four points adrift of the final spot in Europe’s top competition.

With Ollie Watkins’ brace and goals from Morgan Rodgers and John McGinn, Liverpool equaled their worst record of 12 defeats in the Premier League in 11 years.

Virgil van Dijk scored both goals for the Reds, but the second goal was only a consolation. Robertson shared the image on Instagram and thanked the away fans. However, he acknowledged in his message that the display represented a disappointing result in the Premier League’s title defense.

He said: “It was a performance that summed up our season. It was far from the level of this club and the level that you would rightly expect from us.

“But I can’t thank you enough for the last nine years, traveling back and forth across the country, around the world, and cleaning up the destinations wherever I go. I’ll see you for the last time next week.”

Liverpool face Brentford on the final day of the season as Caoich Kelleher and Jordan Henderson prepare for a return to Anfield, while club icons Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson prepare to end their Reds careers.

But with Champions League qualification at stake, Arne Slott shows no signs of slowing down after the 4-2 defeat at Villa Park. The Dutchman had to admit that his dismal performance had shattered the faith of his supporters.

He said: “This is damaging because a win or maybe, just maybe, two draws could have been enough.

“But now we know one thing for sure: if we ourselves need to win, we need to win next week. As we know, for us to need wins, of course the other teams need to pick up points as well.”

Arneslot.

Arne Slott remains under pressure as Liverpool show no signs of turning things around.

“It’s a real loss that we couldn’t get a result here today, let alone win.

“There were parts of the game where we felt the result could have gone our way, but I think people are mainly focused on the period after 2-1 when we couldn’t find any momentum anymore and conceded two more goals.

“That was the most difficult period of the game. But after 2-1 we fell apart and struggled. In the end we were back up 4-2, so they (the players) didn’t give up, but we struggled to control their pace, intensity and quality.”
