Despite having one year left on his existing contract with Manchester City, Josep Guardiola’s future at the club remains uncertain ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea

Manager Josep Guardiola has sent a timely reminder that he still has “one more year” left on his Manchester City contract. Guardiola’s future has been the subject of intense speculation recently, with some suggesting he may be ready to step down after a brilliant decade at the Etihad.

City are reportedly making contingency plans in case the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager decides to leave. Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is also a candidate and recently hinted he might accept the job.

Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea will be Guardiola’s 24th domestic cup semi-final or final match at Wembley as City manager. Asked if this would be his last visit, the 55-year-old said: “No way.”

Manager Guardiola then smiled and said, “I still have one year left (on my contract).” That was the last question of the press conference, so the city manager quickly left the room.

Guardiola has already won the Carabao Cup this season and will aim to win his 20th trophy with City on Saturday.

His side could still finish the campaign with three silverware if he can lead Arsenal to the Premier League title, but they are two points behind the Gunners with games remaining.

Earlier this month, Guardiola said he still has “incredible energy” as City manager, saying: “If it wasn’t for this great environment, even if I had a good title, I wouldn’t have lasted 10 years. I still have incredible energy and I come here on my days off and work, so I’m very energetic.”

“Of course we’re here because we won a lot, so they don’t fire you, they keep trusting you. But apart from that, this club is really, really good. People care about all of us, down to the last detail.

“The details mean that my job as a manager and as a player is to think about what we have to do. It’s like a bubble that makes people feel good. It’s a big club, but here we’re a family.

“You can be disappointed when players don’t play. That’s normal and understandable. But other than that, no one can complain.”
