The former England and Manchester United star was filming part of a BBC Sport soccer broadcast when the incident occurred.

Wayne Rooney has suffered a hand injury that could require surgery. The England legend addressed the issue while recording part of the BBC’s Wayne Rooney Show podcast, which was broadcast on television ahead of the FA Cup final.

Rooney interviewed Jordan Pickford this week and the pair practiced goalkeeping at Everton’s training ground. Rooney dove while trying to save Pickford’s penalty, injuring his left hand. He has spoken with a surgeon about treatment and will undergo further examination on Monday to determine if surgery is necessary.

“I went in and it was a great save from Jordan and then I made a wrong move,” Rooney told the BBC on Saturday, wearing a wrist brace.

He added: “He is with the surgeon. He was hospitalized but returned on Monday.”

The former striker also took part in numerous training sessions during his time with the Everton keeper, all with a smile on his face. The two were team-mates for a time on Merseyside, but Rooney rejoined the club in 2017, just days after Pickford arrived from Sunderland.

Rooney, a former England star, has tried his hand at management since retiring and has understandably attracted the attention of pundits. His time as manager was not very successful and he has not stepped out of the dugout since leaving Plymouth midway through the 2024/25 season.

He has won multiple Premier League titles, but only one FA Cup victory. That was in 2016, when he captained Manchester United to an extra-time victory over Crystal Palace.

In the interview, Rooney and Pickford reflected on how they met before they were team-mates at the club. The two faced each other for the first time in an England game and the goalkeeper made a good impression.

“I’ve watched you grow up and everyone looked up to you as I watched you get selected for England at the Euros,” Pickford said. “So even then (on the bus) I was texting, ‘I’m across the street from Waza.’ I was shaking.

“I was on the bench and it was a great experience. My dream was to play for England and I know only a small percentage of kids growing up get that opportunity.”
