Celtic have issued an apology to Hearts following the post-match chaos that tarnished Saturday’s dramatic final-day title decider. Martin O’Neill’s side endured a nervy finish but won 3-1 to take the Scottish Premiership crown, two points clear of the Jambos.

But the moment was ruined late in stoppage time when supporters rushed onto the pitch following Callum Osmund’s goal. Hearts players, including captain Laurence Shankland, were said to have been assaulted and went straight to their coach, still in their uniforms, and were told to follow police instructions and return to Edinburgh.

Police Scotland are currently investigating and are in discussions with Herts.

Celtic confirmed they were ready and willing to help and stressed there were no excuses for what had unfolded.

In a statement, the club said: “The whole club congratulates Martin, the players and all the staff on a thrilling climax to the club’s 56th Scottish League win, supported by great support.”

“I would like to thank the Celtic fans for their efforts in getting the team over the line.

“The club regrets that so many players took to the field after the win against Hearts.

“We reiterate that there is no justice to this action, which only detracts from the joy of such an occasion for the vast majority of Celtic supporters.

“Celtic will fully co-operate with any investigation and will co-operate with the SPFL in its own process.

“We also apologize to Hearts for the situation their players and staff found themselves in at the end of the match and for the inability to salute their supporters due to these events at the end of an attractive campaign to which they have contributed so much.”
