Arne Slott faces a number of challenges in his second year as Liverpool manager, with the Reds slipping down the table and questions over his future at Anfield

Arne Slott insists he is confident of staying as Liverpool manager

Liverpool manager Arne Slott is confident he will be in charge at Anfield next season, although he insisted there is “always a debate” over whether a manager should stay after a below-average season.

The Dutchman has been forced to answer questions about his future after suffering a significant decline in form over the past 12 months. After an impressive takeover from Jurgen Klopp that brought them the Premier League title in his debut season, Slott’s stock was incredibly high.

However, his second season was a struggle, despite the club spending over £400 million in the summer and breaking British transfer records twice. The Reds were out of title contention by Christmas and had to fight for a spot in the Champions League.

They sit fourth and look set to qualify, but the former Feyenoord manager is confident of staying, although some performances have raised questions about Slott’s future.

“I don’t think it’s my decision alone (whether he becomes Liverpool manager). I’m under contract with the club, we’ve had discussions and yes, that’s my view,” he said.

“If you haven’t had your best season compared to last season, even if you definitely haven’t had a great season, it’s natural that there will be criticism and we all play a part in that. If you don’t win the league, things are going to work out the way they do now.”

Slott also argued that it was not his job to self-evaluate his own performance. “I think there’s always going to be a debate about where the world would have gone if a manager didn’t have his best season,” he said.

“That’s the new reality in football. It’s not my responsibility to criticize people who criticize me. They have every right to that opinion and everyone can share it. Everyone used to do it in the pub, now they can share it[everywhere]. Now it’s more openly done and it’s the same everywhere.”

It’s been well documented that some of Liverpool’s big investments have struggled, particularly Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. The Reds find it difficult to deal with set-pieces and break down teams who are behind, and Slott admits that.

Despite the huge spending, Liverpool are aware they need to strengthen in certain areas with talisman Mohamed Salah leaving the club for the first time in almost a decade. Alisson, another potential player, is also rumored to be linked with an exit at Anfield.
