Pep Guardiola reflects on Jack Grealish’s future after his spell at Everton ends

Jack Grealish’s future remains one of the biggest unknowns in the upcoming European summer, with several possible scenarios on the table and decisions involving the player, Manchester City and Everton set to be made.

Pep Guardiola has given his thoughts on the English winger, who is currently on loan at the Toffees, and must return to the English club when his loan ends.

Guardiola talks about Grealish’s future

Jack joined Everton in August after losing his starting place at City during the 2024/25 season. He played in 20 games, recording two goals and six assists, but his season was cut short due to a foot injury.

Guardiola was asked about the player’s future ahead of the two teams’ match on Monday, May 4, but he declined to give a specific answer.

Manager Guardiola told reporters, “I don’t know. I want to do my best for Jack.”

The Catalan coach stressed that Grealish needs consistency to return to his best form, something he found at Everton before his injury. In this regard, he said that the scenario for next season depends on his performance and the players’ own decisions.

“I know he had a really big impact[at Everton]having played the minutes in the treble season[with Everton].The treble season[in 2023]was extraordinary, and then either I couldn’t help him or we… Maybe he didn’t get to his level. He needs to play game by game and he did that at Everton. Unfortunately he got injured, but I hope he recovers and can continue playing next season.

That’s up to him. It’s completely up to him. There is no doubt about his qualifications. It’s all there.

Looking ahead, the situation at Manchester City could also have an impact. The player has a current contract with City, but his future is not guaranteed and his role at the Etihad could be limited.

Bernardo Silva’s impending departure leaves Grealish with a spot open, as does John Stones’ possible departure, so the club will have to consider whether to use him as an experienced player to support new talent or let him go for more minutes ahead of the summer transfer window, where Hugo Viana is expected to receive several offers for the Englishman.

His desire to play regularly and the progression of his injury could be decisive factors in the final decision.

Meanwhile, Everton host Manchester City at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday 4th May. The match, part of Round 35 of the Premier League, will kick off at 3pm ET.
