Michael Carrick receives Manchester United offer

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to make an initial offer for Michael Carrick on a two-year contract to become their permanent head coach. His backroom staff are also expected to remain after an impressive four months at Old Trafford.

Carrick returned on an interim basis in January and has since guided United to Champions League qualification, losing just two of 15 games.

United sit third in the Premier League with two remaining games against Nottingham Forest and Brighton. The Champions League has already been confirmed for the 2026/27 season, marking a major shift from Ruben Amorim’s efforts in the M16.

The Athletic reports that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has given Carrick the go-ahead after he was encouraged by chief executive Omar Berrada and head of football Jason Wilcox to take the job full-time, with talks ongoing between Carrick and club executives.

The offer is for an initial two-year contract, with an option for further seasons until 2029.

Carrick’s backroom staff will remain in place, with assistant Steve Holland understood to be considered a key player. Coaches Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binion are also set to receive new contracts.

The club believes Carrick’s backroom staff have a strong blend of skill sets and personalities, and those who have observed their sessions at Carrington say there is a clear and positive dynamic within the group.

Asked about his future in Friday’s pre-match press conference, Carrick said: “I can’t fault you for asking the question. There’s two games left and there’s not much else to say, but that’s probably what you’d expect. The situation is pretty clear to all of us. It’s the same in terms of preparing for the games.”

“I knew my future would be decided soon and it would be towards the end of the season. Nothing has changed, nothing has changed much. Whatever it is, it’s pretty close.”

Carrick’s stellar season was highlighted by his nomination for the prestigious Premier League Manager of the Season award.

The EPL announced a shortlist of six players including Keith Andrews, Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola, Andoni Iraola and Regis Le Bris, each with an equally inspiring story for United’s head coach.

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundles to include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, plus 135 channels and complete coverage of the Premier League and EFL from Sky.

Sky has over 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more, with at least 215 of those live from the top flight, along with F1, darts and golf.

Meanwhile, a number of senior players have already made their feelings known for the former midfielder since his transformation. Carrick’s appointment has been backed by several United players, including midfielder Casemiro.

“In my opinion, he is completely worthy[of the Manchester United job]. I think he is a guy who has already proven that he has very good qualities as a Manchester United manager,” he told ESPN Brazil.

“So it’s not up to me to choose, it’s up to the club. But if I could give my opinion, of course he deserves it and he deserves the full confidence of the club.”

“Obviously, there’s a season all year round, but he’s done a great job since he took over and I think he has everything to be a great Manchester United manager over time.”
