Manchester United are set to offer Michael Carrick a two-year contract as head coach. Carrick, who took over as caretaker manager in January following the sacking of manager Ruben Amorim, has impressed in the dugout at Old Trafford. The Red Devils sit third in the standings and look set to win Champions League football next season.
And they could do so with Carrick in charge, with talks reportedly continuing after co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe approved the move following talks with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox regarding Carrick’s future. According to The Athletic, it remains possible that an agreement can be reached before United’s final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest.
The report adds that the deal will see Carrick manage the Red Devils for two years, with the possibility of extending the season until 2029. The salary offered has not been disclosed.
However, his backroom team, including assistant Steve Holland and coaches Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans, will remain and are poised to secure new contracts. Meanwhile, Craig Mawson, who has been promoted to first-team goalkeeping coach, will also remain in a senior role.
United failed to qualify for European football last season under Amorim, but the club supported the Portuguese until January, when they eventually parted ways when Darren Fletcher was appointed interim manager.
Carrick then replaced Fletcher two games later, with the Red Devils confirming he would remain in the role until the end of the season. Despite this, Carrick led United to a top-three finish and came to the fore in the second half of the season with memorable wins against Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Earlier this month, Carrick said: “I’ve said it many times, I’m enjoying being here and I’m enjoying the role I’m in. We’ve had some good results and we’re doing reasonably well. We still want to keep improving and there’s a demographic we want to reach. We’ll see, really.”
“I keep saying the same thing every week. There’s only so much I can say about it, but I’ve said it over and over again. Again, I enjoy being here, I love being here. It’s a real honor to be in the position I’m in, but I thrive on the responsibilities that we have.”
Asked when he expected his future to become clear, Carrick added: “I don’t know, to be honest. It’s not really something I’m looking for in terms of a deadline. When it becomes clear, it will be clear.”
“I’m here now to help the team and help the club get results. So far we’re doing well. We can keep pushing and get better. So, really, that’s all I’m focused on right now.”
