United have been searching for a replacement, but Carrick has consistently been regarded as the front-runner for the position, with support from several members of the team, former players and even Sir Alex Ferguson. The former Middlesbrough manager oversaw a marked improvement in atmosphere and performances, with Champions League qualification confirmed with three games remaining.
With two Premier League games remaining, a home game against Nottingham Forest on Sunday and a visit to Brighton, United are also poised to secure a respectable third-place finish ahead of Liverpool and Aston Villa.
It is expected to be a busy summer at Old Trafford, with both arrivals and departures expected as Carrick begins to put his stamp on the team. Introducing the latest United news.
Manager Mikael Silvestre has urged United to refrain from handing Carrick a long-term contract and avoid repeating past mistakes. The former Old Trafford defender supports Carrick securing his position permanently, but believes he should not be offered a contract longer than two years.
The Frenchman remains conscious of the compensation the club had to pay for a series of managerial sackings. “It doesn’t make sense to give managers long-term contracts, because in most cases they stay for 15 months to two years. We had Pep (Guardiola), (Jurgen) Klopp and (Mikel) Arteta (who stayed at the club for a long time), but apart from that there is a lot of turnover,” Silvestre told Betpac.
“You should start with a short contract, not a long one, and then see how it goes because it’s very vulnerable. Now there are also coaching changes.
“The contract doesn’t mean much because Ruben Amorim was under contract with Sporting. It costs money when you have to let him go. Ruben was expensive. You sign a contract with Erik ten Hag and then you let him go. So it’s better to start with a small contract and if everything goes well, increase the contract.”
Price cut for Casemiro’s replacement
United are estimated to spend in excess of £100m on some of their mid-summer targets. However, they are likely to be able to sign a quality midfielder to fill the void left by Casemiro for less than half that amount.
United are said to be keen to secure a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with the Italian club potentially available for around £43m this summer. Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi is prepared for interest in the 26-year-old.
“I think it is unlikely that teams will move before the end of the season. There is normal interest in our players, but we will evaluate them very calmly and dispassionately at the appropriate time,” he said.
The Serie A side are willing to accept a sale with the aim of reinvesting funds and injecting new blood into their aging midfield.
