Rashford has scored 28 goals in all competitions, his most recent coming in Barcelona’s 2-0 win over rivals Real Madrid. When asked after the win, Rashford admitted he was hoping to stay at Barcelona beyond the summer.
However, to return to La Liga, Barcelona will need to agree a deal with United, or Rashford’s future could be up in the air once again. Stam, who made 127 appearances for United during his career, believes there may be a solution to killing two birds with one stone.
That’s because United have been linked with a move for AC Milan winger Rafael Leao, and reports from Italy suggest the Rossoneri are open to a sale. Stam believes a swap deal with Rashford joining Milan and Leo going the other way could be a win-win for all parties.
“Maybe a swap for Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work. Leao is also a good player. He has shown potential at Milan and of course with what he can do. I think he is a player who should be on Man United’s target list,” the Dutchman told ComeOn.
“Having said that, you have to look not only at the skills of the players, but also the mentality of the players. You have to consider the situation the club is in, what kind of players you bring in and how they can contribute to the club going forward. That way you don’t get frustrated by players not being selected in the starting XI.”
“We’ve seen that it can cause a kind of turmoil within the dressing room. So you have to look at the personality of the player, the big picture and who is the best player to bring to the club.”
“It’s a very exciting feeling to bring in these types of players, but we don’t have to think about what’s best at the moment. We have to think about the long-term project and what’s really important for the club.”
Not only would it give United’s attack some much-needed depth and reinforcement, it would also free up much-needed space on the payroll. Rashford is contracted to United until the summer of 2028 and is said to be on a weekly wage of more than £300,000.
