Mason Greenwood has been fined by Marseille and his relationship with sporting director Mehdi Benatia is said to have broken down, with the club growing frustrated with the former Manchester United forward.

Marseille are left “frustrated” by Mason Greenwood’s “lack of effort” and even “basic appreciation” in new shocking revelations about the former Manchester United forward.

Greenwood, 24, will join Marseille in 2024 on a five-year deal after United agreed to let him go for around £27m. Since moving to France, the England international has racked up eye-catching statistics with 47 goals and 16 assists in 79 games.

However, Greenwood’s behavior off the pitch has raised concerns, with L’Equipe reporting that Marseille are frustrated that Greenwood has not shown enough commitment or appreciation.

With English being spoken in the changing rooms, it is claimed that Greenwood is unwilling to take part in the club’s mandatory French lessons and is confined to his “own world”. Club officials are “tired” of explaining the problem to him and are even resorting to fines in an attempt to change his attitude.

There is now reportedly a rift across the club, with his relationship with sporting director Mehdi Benatia also deteriorating, with both men said to be “completely ignoring” each other on a daily basis. Mr Greenwood is thought to have foreseen the inevitable conclusion before leaving office, but it is not expected to be “straightforward”.

Marseille had hoped to sell Greenwood for a profit in the future, but inconsistent performances in the second half of the season reduced his value. A return to the Premier League is thought to be out of the question for Greenwood, but there are also reports of interest from Serie A and La Liga.

Greenwood’s last goal came in a 1-0 win against Toulouse on 7 March, and his most recent game was a difficult 3-0 defeat at relegated Nantes. The player was demoted to the bench in last month’s home match against Nice, sparking rumors of a rift with manager Habib Bayet.

However, Bey denied such rumors and claimed that Greenwood was unable to perform due to minor injuries. “We’ve been keeping an eye on Mason since the beginning of the week, but he’s been quite limited due to his injury at Lille,” Bay said. “It’s been two games where he’s played through a lot of pain. We can’t put him at risk.”

Marseille and Greenwood travel to Le Havre on Sunday in a crucial game for the club as they aim to secure European football next season.
