Everyone loves a bargain and football clubs are no exception. Despite spending on Windows at an all-time high, there is still money to be saved with smart scouting in the transfer market.
One of the best ways for clubs to do this is through free transfers, which allow them to avoid splurging on multi-million dollar transfer fees to secure a player’s signature. Remarkably, there are three players currently listed as free agents, with an impressive 120 Premier League goals between them. Express Sport details who they are and why they still don’t have a club.
“Football without Origi is meaningless!” These were the words Liverpool fans often said to the Belgian during his time on Merseyside, when he scored 22 goals in the Premier League, but Divock Origi has been away from football since 2024. After leaving Liverpool on a free transfer, Origi signed for AC Milan, but his time in Italy did not go to plan. At the beginning of the 2023/24 season, he was loaned to Nottingham Forest, but upon his return to Milan, Origi was told that his future would be with the Under-23s. Origi’s contract was terminated in December 2025, more than 600 days after his last appearance.
From one former Liverpool ace to another. Philippe Coutinho was respected by the Reds faithful during his 201 games for the club. He scored 47 goals in the Premier League and was rewarded with a spectacular move to Barcelona, but the playmaker never settled at the Catalan giants. The Brazilian enjoyed spells at Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Qatari side Al Duhail, becoming something of a journeyman. The 33-year-old was last seen playing for Vasco da Gama in his native Brazil, but left as a free agent earlier this year. He remains a free agent heading into the 2026 summer transfer window.
And finally, here is a player who seemed to have the world at his feet when he appeared at Tottenham. Dele Alli originally joined Spurs in 2015 and was part of the team that challenged for the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final. However, by 2022 he moved first to Everton and then joined Besiktas on loan. Dale has never been able to regain the form that saw him score 51 goals in the Premier League and is now a free agent after a short spell with Como in Italy.
