With all the money spent in the summer, Liverpool fans were hoping for a strong campaign to defend the Premier League title and success in other competitions. However, the Reds struggled to maintain their good form and would lose the league trophy by the end of the season.
Arne Slott spent a whopping £446m last year to strengthen his squad, signing the likes of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkes. Despite the huge cost of transfers, the current Premier League champions’ best result this season will be a top-five finish in the Champions League.
They left Europe with a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool in the Community Shield and Carabao Cup, while Manchester City beat the Reds 4-0 and were eliminated at the FA Cup quarter-final stage.

With certain areas of the team in need of rebuilding this season and key players missing due to injury, Liverpool will be hoping that 2026/27 will be a season to remember.

Allison has been unlucky with injuries this season, suffering a concussion and multiple hamstring injuries. This means he has missed 18 games so far. However, the veteran goalkeeper has put in some impressive performances for Liverpool and remains a much-loved member of the squad and is likely to be a candidate to stay despite his recent transfer links with Italian side Juventus.
Giorgi Mamadashvili was an excellent secondary player in the goalkeeper position, appearing in 16 games before being sidelined by a knee injury at the end of the season. Alisson is aging at 33 and the Georgian is likely to be retained and made into Liverpool’s new number one. 1.

With two top goalkeepers struggling with injuries this year, Freddie Woodman took on the role of leading the team from the back in his first year with the Reds. The 29-year-old joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Preston North End and was inserted into the deep end following Mamadashvili’s injury. He’s been a great fill-in for unfortunate injuries and will likely remain as a well-regarded backup beyond this season.

Joe Gomez is another star who has struggled with injuries this season, missing eight games so far due to various issues. Due to the lack of talent in the starting XI and short tenure at the club, it is likely that defenders will be sold to enable new talent to be brought in.
Club captain Virgil van Dijk has been a key player in the club’s struggles this season. Reports suggest the Reds will be looking for a long-term successor for the Dutchman this summer, but he will likely be retained to help bring in a new star.
Ibrahima Konate is one star who continues to be linked with a move away from Anfield. He is currently set to become a free agent this summer, but the club are working hard to secure a new contract. Real Madrid had been linked with the defender, but he recently confirmed he was close to signing an extension.

Milos Kerkes was one of Slot’s summer signings, but he did not enjoy immediate success upon joining Liverpool. The left-back left club icon Andy Robertson out of the starting XI, but has been criticized for mistakes in past games. He will be a player the Reds look to develop in the future.
Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley had impressed for Slott’s side before a serious knee injury ruled him out for the season. The 22-year-old has the potential to become Anfield’s new hero in the future.
Giovanni Leoni was just beginning his journey at Liverpool before an anterior cruciate ligament injury ended his debut season. He is one of the players who is certain to stay and hopefully return to the pitch with the same level of performance that he showed in September.
Vice-captain Andy Robertson has confirmed he will leave Liverpool as a free agent this summer after almost a decade at Anfield. The Scotland international is rumored to have a number of clubs keen to sign him, including Premier League rivals Tottenham.
Jeremy Frimpong joined Liverpool in the summer and has been a regular in the starting XI this season. He aims to continue exploring silverware in the UK.
Young defender Calvin Ramsey has only appeared in two cup games for Liverpool this season. He is out on loan to get more regular appearances and could have an impact in the future.

Defensive midfielder Wataru Endo faces a race to be selected for Japan’s World Cup squad, but still has a lot left to do at Liverpool this season. The 33-year-old has made just 12 appearances so far this season, and it looks like new names will be emerging.
Florian Wirtz has endured a difficult start to his time at Liverpool, coming under heavy criticism throughout his debut season. The German has not reached the spectacular heights expected of him during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, but will stay on next season to earn a spot in the slot.
Shining light Dominik Szoboszlai may be linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, but Liverpool will be desperate to keep the dynamic playmaker at Anfield. The Hungarian international has been exceptional in the middle of the park and is a player who will continue to develop for the next campaign.
Alexis Mac Allister is another star rumored to be leaving Anfield this summer. The Argentine did not reach the heights expected this season and had to struggle with the rest of the Reds squad. However, there are no concrete negotiations with other clubs and the 27-year-old will remain at the club until the summer of 2028.
Negotiations to sign Curtis Jones to a new contract have reportedly been on hold for months, with the midfielder potentially leaving the club in the summer and rumored to have been linked with a number of clubs. The 25-year-old has made 46 appearances for Liverpool so far this season and has been highly trusted, but could be on the move within the next few weeks.

Ryan Gravenbirch signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool earlier this year, keeping him at Anfield until 2032. Even after this contract extension, he is unlikely to leave the club in the summer and will likely continue to grow alongside Szoboszlai.
Teenage sensation Trey Nyoni has made his breakthrough in the Reds’ first team this year, making 13 appearances for the first team in domestic and European competitions. The 18-year-old has impressed and could be seen as a future star and could be sent on loan to develop his skills in a potential summer deal.
Stefan Bicetic has not featured for Liverpool in the last two years due to injury and loan spells elsewhere. With his name hardly mentioned in the club’s plans, the 21-year-old is likely to go on another loan move or be sold this summer.

Summer signing Hugo Ekitike has been a shining light for Liverpool this year, contributing 23 goals before picking up a nasty injury against PSG. The 23-year-old is expected to be sidelined for up to 12 months with a ruptured Achilles tendon, which will see him miss part of next season and the upcoming World Cup. The Reds are rooting for a heartbroken star player as he tries to bounce back from a major setback.
Mohamed Salah will leave Anfield a hero after nine years at the Reds. The Egyptian is a modern-day icon, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League, cementing his place in third place on the club’s all-time top scorers list.

Federico Chiesa was Slott’s first signing for Liverpool in 2024 and was welcomed by Juventus as a £10m bargain. However, the Italian international fell out of favor at Anfield and was linked with a move in January. The 28-year-old is likely to be sold this summer to allow for another move.

Rising star Rio Ngmoha is only 17 years old but has already shown he can handle pressure at Anfield. At 16 years and 361 days old, the teenager became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer, scoring in a 3-2 win away to Newcastle. He will be the future for the slot, but will likely stay to earn a spot in the starting lineup.
