Manchester United have been linked with a move for Chelsea and England star Cole Palmer ahead of next season, with club leaders making a decision on his departure.

Manchester United have ruled out a summer move for Cole Palmer. United bosses appear to have decided that signing the England international and Chelsea star is not one of their priorities.

Palmer is said to be doubtful at Chelsea after a difficult season with top-flight strugglers. The attacking midfielder has suffered a dramatic decline in form, leaving his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in jeopardy.

According to reports, Palmer wants to play in the Champions League again next season and is open to a move to United.

Manchester-born Palmer grew up supporting United and has been impressed by the club’s recent resurgence under caretaker manager Michael Carrick.

However, United have other positions to strengthen ahead of next season. Signing Palmer, who turned 24 earlier this week, would be difficult for United to justify financially.

Palmer’s current £150,000-a-week contract runs until 2033. And United know it would take a fee of around £90m to lure Palmer to Old Trafford.

United spent around £210m rebuilding their attacking options last summer, signing Benjamin Sesco, Matheus Cunha and Brian Mbeumo.

United are also confident Bruno Fernandes will stay, but Marcus Rashford’s future remains uncertain and he could return to Old Trafford this summer if he is unable to secure a permanent move to Barcelona. United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to sign two central midfielders and two defenders this summer.

Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte will leave United, while injured centre-back Matthijs de Ligt is also expected to leave. And United privately admitted that Palmer was an expensive luxury the club did not need and could not afford.

United’s leaders must make the decision to take over the manager’s role before taking on any other job. Carrick has impressed since taking over the reins in January.

Casemiro recently spoke about the former midfielder staying: “In my opinion, he is completely deserving (of the Manchester United job) and is a man who has already shown that he has very good qualities as a Manchester United manager.”

“So it’s not up to me to choose, it’s up to the club. But if I could give my opinion, of course he deserves it and he deserves the full confidence of the club.”

“Obviously, there’s a season all year round, but he’s done a great job since he took over and I think he has everything to be a great Manchester United manager over time.”
