Arsene Wenger’s big regret during his time at Arsenal was not being able to overcome the big hurdle in European competition – this generation and Mikel Arteta can finally overcome the big hurdle
Mikel Arteta is currently on the brink of football immortality.
The Arsenal manager can do something that not even Arsene Wenger, the greatest manager in the club’s modern history, could do.
Arsenal have reached the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years and are five points clear in the race for the Premier League title. What an opportunity! This was Arsenal’s first Champions League final in 20 years, having lost to Barcelona in 2006 with two late goals.
There is no doubt that this is Wenger’s biggest regret despite his incredible success. The 2004 Invincibles team was the best team in Europe, but they never won the Champions League.

Two years later, the team failed to deliver the Holy Grail, losing in Paris before disbanding. It is strange that for a club as big and successful as Arsenal, they have never been crowned European champions.
That is the problem now. Personally, I think winning the title is more important this season. The 22 years since winning the Premier League is the longest period without a title since the end of the war.
That’s what many fans covet as the ultimate barometer. That is why they are sometimes stable and nervous. They are so desperate to get it done. However, the semi-final against Atlético Madrid should change the course of the game. That should give them the belief that they can do both.
The game against Atlético was a tough one. It wasn’t very clean. But they did it. They have played super soccer in Europe, defeating the likes of Atlético (twice), Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. They are unbeaten in the competition and top the league phase table.
And in the last game against Fulham they played with style and flair. Forget all that they don’t deserve it. A champion always deserves it. It’s the ultimate test.
Arteta has looked tired, stressed and under pressure lately. The pressure is intense and big. A few weeks ago, Arsenal looked like they were falling apart. Questions will inevitably arise about his future. But after Atlético, Arteta put on his biggest smile, danced with his players and enjoyed the moment.
Arteta is a tough taskmaster and a great tactician. Sometimes he can be incredibly intense. You could say it’s too intense. He is completely different from Wenger. He craves control and disciplined, tight performance.
However, Arteta could go down in history as a club legend. They are just four games, or four wins away from the Arsenal manager’s greatest feat in a single season.
History books are meant to be rewritten.
